Annual Report

Editorial system design for a nonprofit foundation

Project Overview

The foundation’s annual report serves as a key moment of transparency—sharing progress, outcomes, and impact with a wide range of stakeholders. Previous reporting struggled with dense information and low engagement, making it difficult for readers to connect with the story behind the data. This project focused on creating a clear, human-centered editorial system that balances structure with storytelling, allowing complex information to be understood and trusted.

Challenge

The report needed to communicate progress clearly while serving multiple audiences at once—from board members and donors to internal teams and the general public. The primary challenge was reducing information density without oversimplifying the work or losing credibility.

The Approach

A flexible editorial system was developed to guide readers through the report with clarity and intention. Strong typographic hierarchy, controlled color use, and consistent layout rhythm helped break down complex content while maintaining visual continuity across sections. Narrative moments and data-driven content were treated with equal care, ensuring the report felt both informative and approachable.

The System in Practice

The final design balances storytelling and structure across key sections:
  • A bold cover establishes tone and confidence
  • Editorial spreads that guide reading flow
  • Data visualizations designed for clarity, not complexity
  • Impact stories that humanize the foundation’s work
Each spread supports engagement while reinforcing trust and transparency.

Outcome

The annual report was published and distributed to stakeholders, providing a clear and accessible overview of the foundation’s progress and impact. The final system offers a cohesive framework for communicating complex information in a way that is structured, readable, and human.

This project reflects my approach to editorial system design using structure, clarity, and narrative to make complex information meaningful and accessible.
